SBP - National Disaster-Recovery Nonprofit Annual Fundraiser

The Challenge:

Raise awareness and money to get as many people as possible back into safe, secure homes following Hurricane Harvey in Houston.

The Plan:

Document the emotional stories of hurricane/flood survivors who are clients of national disaster-recovery nonprofit SBP. Further, highlight these stories through videos and news coverage, especially during end-of-year fundraising push.

  • Captured first home rebuild, interviewed family on first day of construction and at “Welcome Home” party. In addition to video production, GMPR also planned and executed events for construction kick-off and completion. This included news release creation and distribution, media outreach, Op-Ed creation and placement, social media live streams and integrations.

  • Worked with Steve Harvey production company to highlight SBP’s work on FOX New Year’s Eve live coverage. Coordinated with production team to have Houston family live on-air in New York.

  • Documented tragic story of a Houston woman whose house burned in 2015, her husband died in 2016, and, in 2017, Hurricane Harvey flooded the tiny “shed” she was staying in with no heat or running water. GMPR videoed Ms. Asha in 2018 before construction of a new home began. Then, in 2019, we were on-site for the “Welcome Home” party.

  • Immediately following the hurricane, GMPR also captured and produced videos showing Houstonians desperate situations, as well as a series of tutorials warning people about contractor fraud, insurance and FEMA basics, and instructions on how to remediate mold, etc.

  • We produced PSAs and other videos showcasing SBP’s partnerships with Toyota, State Farm, Jefferies, and JJ Watt Foundation.

  • At the 1-year anniversary mark, we worked with Toyota to show SBP’s impact in Houston through a series of three videos, story posted on Toyota Newsroom, and content for @ToyotaUSA and @SBPUSA social media channels.

The Results:

SBP’s annual fundraising campaigns raised record-setting amounts. Specifically, the 2019 fundraising gala alone raised more than $1 million after three videos were shown at the event.
